Honest Abe

August 28, 2020 - News Post

Greetings, my excellent friends. Today, Bill & Ted 3 comes out. I couldn't be more excited.

I don't even care if it's that good a movie. It's just been nice to have a date to look forward to in the last few months that isn't the looming deadline, dentist appointment, or an annoying family member's birthday.

This is the first Bill & Ted movie in 29 years. Aside from a couple awkward moments, the old ones hold up pretty well.

So how does this relate to Dr. Lobster, a comic that doesn't hold up at all? Let's wind our clocks back...

Dr. Lobster's original run came to an end in 2002. Several months later, Wrench Farm was born, and the cycle of comics began anew (in more ways than one). That is a story all in itself, but suffice it to say, Dr. Lobster was restarted after a brief hiatus.

Michael and I had always planned to fill the gap in comics. And what better way to do that than with a parody of the 80's second favorite time travel franchise?

Thus, Bill & Ted's Non Non Heinous Ripoff was born. Well, not in this timeline. Yet back before Michael thought of a hilarious way to abruptly end the comic, we wrote an outline, divvied up the work, and began writing scripts. In retrospect, it probably wouldn't have shared the same warm, kind-hearted spirit as the films.

Logo art and new characters were created. We would have added The Grim Reaper, Beeth-Oven, and inside jokes galore. If all had gone according to plan, the finished comics would have been added to the archives silently and without fanfare.

Here is one of the scripts from the storyline, copied exactly as written:

"that clock is always running" / but can't we just come back to right after we left? / no. "but, i mean it's a.." / NO. "but" ALWAYS RUNNING.

This wouldn't be the first time we had gone back to fill in months’ worth of missing comics, nor would it be the last.

I had planned to save this tale for when I ran out of DrL comics to remaster, but I never thought Bill & Ted 3 would actually be made. I guess today is as good a day as any to tell you the story. If I change my mind, I can always go back in time and stop myself from writing this.

Be excellent to one another, and party on, dudes!
